Lewisburg, West
Virginia 1913
Lewisburg
is one of the oldest towns in West Virginia.
Originally called “The Savannah,” then “Fort Savannah,” then “Camp
Union,” it was finally named “Lewisburg” in honor of Gen. Andrew Lewis. The town was incorporated in 1782 making it
the fourth (though some say the third) town in what is now West Virginia. The place was “laid out into lots of half an
acre each, with convenient streets. It
will be unlawful to build a house less than 18 x 20 feet, and, in addition, it
must have a brick or stone chimney.”
