The Cabell &
Vandiver Hotel, last operated as The Stratton Hotel.
It stood on the
site of the old Greenbrier Valley Bank and burned in 1897.
Even in 1835 the
town of Lewisburg was a thriving business community. The population was 750.
There were 7 attorneys and 3 regular physicians. And industries flourished: 6 mercantile stores, 1 printing office
issuing a weekly paper, 2 tanyards, 3 saddlers, 4 blacksmith shops, 2
coppersmiths and tin plate workers, 3 brick layers, 4 house carpenters, 4
tailor shops, 2 cabinet makers, 2 watch and clock makers, 2 wagon makers, and 3
hotels.
