For many years, the only bank
between Staunton and Charleston was in Lewisburg. At the age of 33,
Alexander Ferdinand Mathews, who was Greenbrier County’s first
“official” banker, founded the Bank of Lewisburg. It opened for business on July 29, 1871. Mathews’ partners in starting the institution
were Judge Adam Snyder and Judge Homer A. Holt. Mathews led the bank continuously until his death.
