The Old Stone House Photo from “The Mountains Speak”
In
1808, Reverend John McIlhenney, of the Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg,
founded the town’s first school, The Lewisburg Academy, and designed a
classical curriculum. Classes were held
in the Old Stone House, which was built in the late 1700’s and still stands on
Court Street. A native of South
Carolina, and only 27 years old at the time, Rev. McIlhenny indicated that it
was his desire to remain in Lewisburg indefinitely, both to the growth of the
school, and to insure his flock was well pastored.
