Initially called The First Methodist Church and built in
1820, The John Wesley Methodist Church is one of the oldest brick churches in
West Virginia. On May 23, 1862, during
the Battle of Lewisburg, the church was struck by cannon fire. One may still
see where the cannonball struck the corner of the building. Following the war the church was taken over
by freed slaves and is still in use today.
