From 1896 until 1901 independent telephone companies were
very active throughout southern West Virginia.
It was during this time that exchanges were constructed in Lewisburg,
Ronceverte and Alderson. People living
in the county seat could now communicate with the outside world. Over lines owned by the “Limestone Telephone
Company” the Chesapeake and Potomac furnished service through Lewisburg to
Marlinton and from Ronceverte to Union.
