Henry Gilmer 1858-1922
When the great fire of August 1897 devastated the center
of Lewisburg, prominent local attorney, Henry Gilmer, fought valiantly. Joining with the townspeople, he helped to
form bucket brigades that passed buckets of water from a local well and spring. The day after the fire he called citizens
together and started a movement that resulted in the installation of a town
water system.
