Lawmakers on the
way to a meeting.
Lewisburg became the “western
capital of Virginia” in 1833 when the State Supreme Court of Appeals began
holding sessions. The only one of the
tribunals not held in Richmond increased the town’s political and social
importance. Several large hotels,
including the Old Long Ordinary, nicknamed the “Old Long Ornery,” were filled
on court days. The “Long Ornery” was
built by Richard Tyree around 1800 on stood on the west side of Court Street
near the corner of main.
